“Landscapes are never still — they shift, breathe, dissolve and re-emerge.”
Navigating the Layers of Nature and Perception
Born in 1980 in East Jutland, Denmark, Jeppe Lauge’s work explores the intricate interplay between nature, perception, and human intervention. His paintings inhabit a moment between stillness and motion, capturing the fragile boundary where landscapes begin to dissolve, reform, and reimagine itself. Blending realism with abstraction, Lauge evokes the emotional texture of nature in flux — not just what we see, but what we feel as the environment changes around us.
Lauge graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2011. He currently resides and works in Kulhuse, Denmark, after spending a decade in Amsterdam.
Artistic Practice and Conceptual Framework
Lauge's practice is grounded in a dualistic visual language that merges naturalistic imagery with abstract geometric elements. His process begins with photographs of both cultivated and wild landscapes, which he transforms into digital collages. These collages become the basis for layered oil paintings on canvas, resulting in works that oscillate between realism and abstraction. The juxtaposition of organic forms with precise geometries reflects the mediated nature of contemporary experience, where reality is continuously shaped and refracted by technology and human presence.
Spiritual Resonance and the Human-Nature Connection
More than visual inquiries, Lauge's works invite a contemplation of our spiritual and emotional relationship with the natural world. By deconstructing and reassembling natural elements, he reveals the layers of human influence upon the environment. Through this lens, Lauge challenges the division between the natural and the constructed, offering a subtle yet powerful meditation on the complex entanglement of humanity and environment.
